Recently, actor Rahul Bose, during his stay with a high-end hotel in Chandigarh, got charged with GST on fresh fruits (two bananas). Because the law does not allow anyone to charge GST on fresh fruits, the actor chose to leverage the powerful platform of social media, and expose the illegal collection of tax done by the hotel.
The actor tweeted, “You have to see this to believe it. Who said fruit wasn’t harmful to your existence? Ask the wonderful folks at @JWMarriottChd” along with a video showing the bananas and its receipt. After that, the actor opened a floodgate of humorous posts.
And then, here is how it went on. In a few hours, the incident was all over the Twitter, Facebook, and other social networking sites. After looking at the buzz of this issue on social media, the Chandigarh excise and taxation department imposed a penalty of Rs 25,000 on the hotel for illegally collecting tax on a non-taxable item. It surely depicted the power of social media, but it was not all that the moment came up with!
